Having a Garden Room is more popular than ever – and for good reasons!
They can be used for basically anything. Ranging from Garden Offices to multifunctional Family Rooms, they are fantastic additions to your property.
But what do you need to know about building your very own Garden Room? It can be a daunting task full of research and recommendation seeking. So we built you this guide to steer you in (hopefully) the right direction for building your latest outdoor project.
Garden Room Ideas
Are you at the inspiration stage? We’ve got you covered in this link here.
The biggest desire and benefit of having a Garden Room is the home-away-from-home feeling. Although you’re only a short walk away from your back door, you gain a sense of retreat.
The idea is to create them so they’re able to open-up for that beautiful British summer, while still being enclosed enough to still be fully functional in winter.
At a glance, here are how some of our clients are using their fully kitted out Garden Rooms:
- Additional Living Space
- Garden Office (More info here)
- Home Theatre
- Game Rooms
- Outdoor Kitchens
From fully enclosed kitchens to half-sheltered BBQ areas, we’ve seen a massive up-tick in Outdoor Kitchen projects in 2022-2023!
Though this definitely falls under Garden Room Ideas, we decided to throw together a small design guide to inspire your very own al fresco cooking experience.
Do I Need Planning Permission for a Garden Room?
TLDR: No…. but it depends!
Since they’re considered outbuildings, they fall within your permitted property rights.
Realistically you won’t need planning permission for your garden room. But it does depend on what you’re using your garden room for.
The following parameters would require planning permission:
- If the building is more than 1 storey or over 2.5m
- Will occupy more than 50% of your property
- Balconies, verandas, or any raised platforms
- Would be used for living quarters
These are the main bits but it’s worth checking out uk.gov for more information as no two projects are the same.

But then we have a UK crowd favourite as well.
